I am Deborah Castro, an Assistant Professor in Media Studies at the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies, University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and a research fellow at ITI-LARSyS (Portugal).
In 2015, I received my PhD in Communication at Autonomous University of Barcelona (awarded summa cum laude) funded by the Spanish Government. During this period, I spent a few months as a visiting researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, in the USA.
In 2016, I moved to Portugal as a Post-Doctoral researcher at Interactive Technologies Institute. There, I was also a Visiting Assistant Professor at University of Madeira (2017-2018).
I came to the Netherlands in 2018 to join the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam as a lecturer (2018-2020). I also received a Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Individual Fellowship to work on my project “Living in the media” (2020-2023).
More about me
I am curious about people, and all that this complex word involves (e.g. identities, culture, places). I am excited about stories, those that people articulate the very first time they meet you, and also those they only decide to share when they are comfortable enough.
I enjoy listening, observing and dialoguing. I love movement. And exploring. And learning. And teaching. And learning again. When I am not working on my research, you can probably find me reading, exercising, relaxing with a cup of tea, or talking to friends and relatives.
